AbstractThe upper level cyclonic vortice (ULCV) is one of the main systems that produce alterations in the weather of the northeast Brazil (NEB). The ULCV is a low-pressure system formed in the upper troposphere and whose closed circulation cyclonic has the center more cold than the periphery. The intense trough of upper levels (TUL) over NEB has the similar behavior than ULCV, presenting cloud in the periphery and absence of cloud in the center, however, in the streamlines fields; these do not appear closed. The objective of this work is to study the spatial distribution of cyclonic vorticity associated to the ULCV/TUL and his relation with the years ENSO. The variables used were the daily zonal (u) and meridional (v) wind components, in the level of 200 hPa, obtained from the global model reanalysis project of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/ National Centers for Atmosphere Research (NCEPNCAR) and Southern Oscillation Index(SOI) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Daily rainfall data obtained of National Agency of the Waters (Agência Nacional das Águas - ANA) and images from METEOSAT and GOES satellites were used too. The relative vorticity, z = (v/x - u/y) in 200 hPa is computed in each gridpoints in the domain of 90°W 20°W, 5°N 45°S, during austral summer of 1994 2001 period. Three sub-regions (Northwest of the NEB, center of the Bahia and semi-arid) were selectioned and maps of spatial distribution of the density of occurrence of relative vorticity were built. The days with z < zc where zc = - 2,5 x 10-5 s-1 were computed in each gridpoint, this value is called cyclone occurrence density. Two cases of ULCV were selected, the first one in year of El Niño and second one in year of La Niña, to compare their intensity over the sub-regions. The results show that exists a high density of events cyclonic over the NEB, except in the sub-region of northwest. However, separately for each summer, the behavior is distinct agreement with the ENSO. In the summer of El Niño (1997-1998) observed that the higher density of cyclonic events occurred in the sub-region semi-arid of the NEB, reaching approximately 45 days. In the normal summer (2000 2001) the center of the Bahia has more days number (45 days) with cyclonic vorticity. On the other hand, in the summer 1995-1996 (La Niña) had a decrease in the day number with cyclonic vorticity in the domain in study. It was observed a displacement of the higher density (~ 20 days) of cyclonic vorticity for the ocean Atlantic. In this year of La Niña, the three sub-regions practically did not suffer a lot of influences, presenting approximately 10 occurrences for all the summer. The studies of cases showed that, so much in years of El Niño as in years of La Niña can occur intense ULCV, that are capable of inhibit the rains through of his subsidence centers.
